  • First storyboard created

During today’s class session my work partner Dave and I came up with our first storyboard. We spent most of the session discussing a few ideas and if they would work. We wanted an outcome that was a tangible way of communicating our interpetation of communication.

The storyboard we created started with the idea of a communication being transformed or personalised in the process of going from ‘a’ to ‘b’. It started with a girlfriend typing a message to her boyfriend saying “I’m leaving you”. This message then prints out, folds itself into a paper plane, flies to the boyfriend’s house, unfolds, and then delivers him a slap to the face. The important part of the clip is what happens in the time that the paper plane is flying. It gets ‘personalised’ along the way, flying around Wellington town centre, cafes, shops and creative areas, getting decorated with various markings along the way. This could include such things as postage stamps, coffee stains, or graphiti etc.

The idea behind occurs at any level of communication. A simple idea, feeling or opinion starts off as a plain, basic, message which is personalised by a tone or emotion in its transition from one person to another. In a conversation the idea we a trying to convey travels from our brains, through our mouth and on its way to the other person in the conversation it gains a tone, volume, or even noise interference. So in the end, the person receiving the communication gets a message which has been coloured with a tone, context and a sense of emotion attached.

So when you consider our storyline, the girlfriend starts with the basic idea to leave her boyfriend. In the process from getting from her to her boyfriend, her message gains a touch of Wellington personality.

So after today’s session we have realised that it is the journey behind a communication that colours it with a sense personality or emotion.
