  • Plane takes its second test flight

Dave and I spent this afternoon making our second test clip for our paper plane.

Loooking at the complexity of our most recent storyboard we decided to dismiss the idea of having several paper planes and just stick with following one as we originally planned.

Feeling a little uninspired, we decided to just get stuck in and shoot some images of the plane in flight in town and let it take us from there. We made a new plane rig out of tidy heavy stock paper.

We knew we wanted the body of our clip to be filmed in town, around characteristic city features. So we took our paper plane rig down Cuba street. The camera view follows the paper plane from an apartment building on a side street, down Cuba Street to Manners mall.

We also ‘borrowed’ a female classmate to act in typing a message and also took some satellite photos from Google Earth.

All compiled together in Windows Movie Maker we have a girl typing a message, it travelling through town and shooting upwards into a satellite view.

This is only the first half of our clip. From here the paper plane will descend from the satellite image, pass more relevant features and end at the recipient’s house.

We realise that our future clip will have to have more still images to provide a bit more continuity in movement. Our current clip is very much stop-start and it appears to speed up and slow down depending on the physical distance between still shots. Also, we still had problems with the background or foreground being out of focus due to the position of the paper plane.
